How does mobile microsuction work?
Microsuction is a highly effective and precise method of ear wax removal. The procedure is carried out using a precision suction device, like a miniature hoover which carefully removes ear wax from the ear canal without coming into direct contact with the sensitive structures inside your ear. The procedure is performed using special magnified glasses, which allow the specialist to clearly see inside the ear canal and ensure that the wax is removed safely and thoroughly. This level of precision makes microsuction an ideal choice for removing ear wax, particularly where the wax is hard, impacted, or located deep within the ear.
Do I need to use oil before my treatment?
We would suggest the use of olive oil for at least a day before your appointment. This can help to soften hard wax and allow the microsuction to grip the wax more easily. If you have not used oil or are booking a same day appointment we can still remove ear wax in a safe and pain free way.
Is the microsuction procedure painful?
The microsuction technique is designed to be pain free. There is the possibility of some mild discomfort, however the level of discomfort you may experience depends upon the amount and type of wax you have. Hardened old wax will naturally be more difficult to extract, you may experience a feeling of pressure if the wax forms a complete plug in your ear canal, this should be brief though and alleviated once the wax is extracted.
Are there any side effects or risks associated with ear wax removal?
Ear wax removal is a low-risk procedure. As with any medical treatment, there are potential side effects although these are uncommon. They can include temporary dizziness, mild discomfort, or a brief ringing sensation in the ears (tinnitus). Our NHS trained clinicians will take every precaution to reduce the likelihood of side effects and explain any sensations you may temporarily experience. Upon booking your appointment, you will receive an email with our consent form. This form provides detailed information about the procedure and outlines any potential risks, ensuring you are fully informed before your treatment.
Will microsuction ear wax removal improve my hearing?
Removal of ear wax will undoubtably improve your hearing. If the wax is old and impacted and has formed a complete ‘plug’ which fills the ear canal, this will prevent soundwaves reaching the eardrum (tympanic membrane). Many people will experience hearing a higher register of sounds once the wax plug is removed, hearing becomes more crisp and precise. This can drastically improve the sufferers quality of life, there is extensive research and evidence that hearing problems can affect mood and engagement with others, this can be particularly impactful to older people and lead to a decline in cognition.
How long does each session take?
Each session is booked for a 30 minute slot. This is to allow our clinician time to fully assess your ears before any treatment begins. Sometimes wax may not be present, in which case we will signpost you towards appropriate treatment given the individual symptoms you may be experiencing. Depending on the amount and type of wax present, the treatment may take longer and involve other treatments until the wax can be safely dislodged and removed.
Do I need a referral for the service?
No, a doctors referral is not needed to use our service. Many GPs do not now offer ear wax removal and instead refer patients to ENT clinics at local hospitals. This can involve lengthy waits to be seen which can be extremely unpleasant if you are suffering a sudden onset of hearing loss due to wax build up. Simply choose a time which suits you and book your appointment via our website.
Do you offer ‘out of hours’ or emergency appointments?
Yes, we will have advertised availability of our standard bookable hours, however if you require an urgent appointment we will endeavour to accommodate this. Please get in touch via our contact form or directly using our dedicated WhatsApp service. Please note we will charge an additional premium for out of hours services dependant of time and distance travelled, this will be agreed prior to the appointment.
Do you use any other methods such as syringing?
We do also offer a wax removal method called ‘irrigation’. This isn’t the same as syringing which is an old treatment now recognised to be unsafe. Irrigation involves using a gentle and controlled pulse of clean water to flush the ear canal in a precise manner to help dislodge problem wax which may be stuck to the skin too firmly to be removed by microsuction alone. We would discuss the possible use of this alongside microsuction during the appointment, it would be your choice then to have the procedure as well as microsuction.
Should I clean my ears myself following the appointment to prevent future build up?
We will offer full aftercare advice following your removal procedure. The ear should naturally have a level of wax inside it to combat skin dryness and infections. We do not recommend self cleaning however as there are risks of damaging your ears without a proper view and correct tools.
